all Scriptures quoted from the NASB

Mark 15:28
And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, 'And He was numbered with transgressors.'

1 Peter 2:24
and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness;

Matthew 27:46
About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI!” that is, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”

At the sixth hour, darkness descended over the whole land and Jesus hung on the cross in the dark, alone. Not since the creation, had the earth ever experienced such a deep and tangible darkness; a darkness that you could touch. As a frightened silence spread across the darkened earth, a hush of awe spread across heaven. Picture in your mind, if you can, the universe watching in horror as a giant cauldron was readied in heaven. It was the biggest container that ever was. It was filled with sin; past, present, and future. All the sins that were, are, and ever will be committed were all poured together in that giant container.

The universe closed its eyes and refused to look. The sun, the moon, and the stars, all stopped shining as they mourned. The anticipation was more than the universe could bear. With a heavy sigh God poured out the sin upon his only Son. He watched in grief as His Son absorbed the sickening substance.

He who knew no sin became sin for us. The weight of the sins of the world hung upon the man who hung upon the cross. The God who could not tolerate sin became sin.

In anguish, Jesus cried out My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? How the tears must have flowed from the Fathers eyes. How the angels must have wept. How the earth must have groaned under the weight of the cross.

As Jesus' words why have you forsaken me echoed across the suddenly silent heavenly temple, God turned His eyes away from Jesus and He looked down through time, straight at you. With a tear stained voice He whispered, “I did it for you.”
